Green card after 1 year (I-485)

You must apply

U.S. law requires refugees to apply for a green card, which is lawful permanent resident status, after at least 1 year of physical presence [source].

Travel outside the United States during that year does not count as presence. The Policy Manual says the year is measured when USCIS decides the application, and that only days in the United States count. Read Can I leave the USA? before you travel [source].

Eligibility

What to send (principal applicant)

Family members

Derivative spouses and children follow similar rules, but USCIS points derivatives to the fee schedule for the I-485 fee [source]. Whether derivatives pay: not stated clearly by the pages checked.

If you need to travel

Do not leave while the I-485 is pending until a lawyer has told you which document, if any, keeps the application alive. The Form I-131 instructions say leaving without advance parole generally abandons a pending I-485, and they do not say a refugee travel document prevents that [source].

Do not put Form I-131 in the same envelope as Form I-485 [source]. The travel page is Can I leave the USA?.
